"Pravasi Bharathi 810 AM", world's first Malayalam digital radio is on air!

"Pravasi Bharathi 810 AM", world's first Malayalam digital radio and the first digital radio in the Middle East is on air from 22th January using both Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM) and traditional AM Broadcast. Pravasi Bharathi Broadcasting Corporation operating from its headquarter in UAE. The Station operates in AM/DRM simulcast using a 200 kW Nautel transmitter. The station can reach about 1250 km around Abu Dhabi.

മലയാളത്തിലെ ആദ്യത്തെ ഡിജിറ്റല്‍ റേഡിയോ സ്റ്റേഷന്‍ "പ്രവാസി ഭാരതി 810 AM", യു.എ.ഇയിലെ അബുദാബിയില്‍ നിന്ന് പ്രവര്‍ത്തനമാരംഭിച്ചു. സാധാരണ FM അല്ലെങ്കില്‍ AM സാങ്കേതികവിദ്യയിലാണ് റേഡിയോ സ്റ്റേഷനുകള്‍ പ്രക്ഷേപണം ചെയ്യുന്നത്. അതില്‍ നിന്നു വ്യത്യസ്തമായി ഡിജിറ്റല്‍ റേഡിയോ മോണ്ടിയാല്‍ (Digital Radio Mondiale - DRM) എന്ന നൂതന സംവിധാനത്തിലാണ് ഈ സ്റ്റേഷന്‍ പ്രവര്‍ത്തിക്കുന്നത്. നിലവില്‍ അനലോഗിലും ഡിജിറ്റലായും പ്രക്ഷേപണമുണ്ട്. ഗള്‍ഫ് രാജ്യങ്ങളില്‍ രാവിലെ 5 മുതല്‍ രാത്രി 12.10 വരെ അനലോഗിലും തുടര്‍ന്ന് രാവിലെ 5 വരെ ഡിജിറ്റലിലുമാണ് പ്രക്ഷേപണം ചെയ്യുന്നത്. അബുദാബിയില്‍ നിന്നും 1250 km കിലോമീറ്റര്‍ പരിധിയില്‍ 810 KHz ഫ്രീക്വന്‍സിയില്‍ സ്റ്റേഷന്‍ ലഭ്യമാണ്.

എന്താണ് ഡിജിറ്റല്‍ റേഡിയോ?

റേഡിയോ പ്രക്ഷേപണത്തിനായി വിവിധ സങ്കേതങ്ങൾ ഇന്ന് ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. ആംപ്ലിറ്റ്യൂഡ് മോഡുലേഷൻ അഥവാ AM, ഫ്രീക്വൻസി മോഡുലേഷൻ അഥവാ FM തുടങ്ങിയവ ഇത്തരം ഉപാധികളാണ്. SW (Short Wave - ഹ്രസ്വതരംഗം), MW (Medium Wave - മധ്യതരംഗം) എന്നീ ഫ്രീക്വൻസികളിൽ ആംപ്ലിറ്റ്യൂഡ് മോഡുലേഷൻ ആണ് കൂടുതൽ ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നത്. ദീർഘദൂരപ്രക്ഷേപണത്തിന് അനുയോജ്യമാണെങ്കിലും വിദ്യുത്കാന്തിക തടസ്സങ്ങൾക്ക് (EMI) എളുപ്പം വിധേയമാകും എന്നതിനാൽ കൂടുതൽ വ്യക്തതയുള്ള ശബ്ദം ഇതിൽ ലഭ്യമല്ല.

ഫ്രീക്വൻസി മോഡുലേഷൻ (FM) ആണ് പ്രാദേശിക പ്രക്ഷേപണത്തിന് ഇപ്പോൾ കൂടുതല്‍ ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്ന സങ്കേതം. കൂടുതൽ വ്യക്തതയാർന്ന ശബ്ദവും വൈദ്യുത കാന്തിക ശല്യപ്പെടുത്തലുകൾക്ക് എളുപ്പം വിധേയമാകില്ല എന്നതും ഇതിന് പ്രചാരം ലഭിക്കാൻ സഹായകരമായി. ടെലിവിഷൻ മൂലം കുറഞ്ഞു പോയ ശ്രോതാക്കളെ റേഡിയോയിലേക്ക് തിരിച്ചെത്തിക്കാൻ ഫ്രീക്വൻസി മോഡുലേഷൻ സങ്കേതമാണ് സഹായകരമായത്. പ്രക്ഷേപണ പരിധി കുറവാണ് എന്നത് FM സങ്കേതത്തിന്റെ ഒരു ന്യൂനതയാണ്. ശക്തിയുള്ള സ്റ്റേഷനുകളുടെ പരിധി ഏകദേശം 50 കിലോമീറ്റര്‍ വരെയുള്ളൂ.

ആംപ്ലിറ്റ്യൂഡ് മോഡുലേഷനിലെ തരംഗങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് കൂടുതല്‍ ദൂരം സഞ്ചരിക്കാനാകുമെങ്കിലും ശബ്ദവ്യക്തതയില്ലാത്തത് പ്രശ്നമാണ്. ഇതിനുള്ള പരിഹാരമാണ് ഡിജിറ്റല്‍ റേഡിയോ മോണ്ടിയാല്‍ (Digital Radio Mondiale - DRM). തരംഗങ്ങള്‍ AM (SW or MW) തന്നെ. ആംപ്ലിറ്റ്യൂഡ് മോഡുലേഷനിലെ 30 MHz ന് താഴെയുള്ള തരംഗങ്ങളാണ് പ്രക്ഷേപണത്തിനുപയോഗിക്കുന്നത്. കൂടുതൽ ദൂരം സഞ്ചരിക്കാൻ കഴിവുള്ളതിനാൽ ഹ്രസ്വതരംഗ-ബാൻഡ് (Short Wave Band) ആണ് പ്രധാനമായും ഉപയോഗപ്പെടുത്തുന്നത്. ഇത് ഡീകോഡ് ചെയ്തെടുക്കുന്ന റേഡിയോ ഇതിനെ ശബ്ദമാക്കി മാറ്റുന്നു. അതും FM ന്റെ ശബ്ദവ്യക്തതയോടെ! മാത്രമോ, സ്റ്റേഷന്റെ പേരു വിവരം, പരിപാടിയുടെ പേര്, പ്രധാന വാര്‍ത്തകള്‍, അറിയിപ്പുകള്‍, ചിത്രങ്ങള്‍ ഇവ റേഡിയോയുടെ സ്ക്രീനില്‍ കാണാം. ഒരേ ഫ്രീക്വന്‍സിയില്‍ത്തന്നെ വ്യത്യസ്ത ചാനലുകള്‍ പ്രക്ഷേപണം ചെയ്യാനുള്ള സംവിധാനമുണ്ട്. ആകാശവാണിയുടെ DRM സ്റ്റേഷനുകള്‍ ഒരേ സമയം വ്യത്യസ്ത ഭാഷാ ചാനലുകള്‍ പ്രക്ഷേപണം ചെയ്യാനുള്ള സംവിധാനം ആയിക്കഴിഞ്ഞു. ഒരേ സമയം മൂന്നു ചാനലുകള്‍ ഒരു ഫ്രീക്വന്‍സിയില്‍ പ്രക്ഷേപണം ചെയ്യുന്നത് ആകാശവാണി പരീക്ഷിച്ചിരുന്നു.

നിലവില്‍ ഇന്ത്യയുടെ ഔദ്യോഗിക സ്റ്റേഷനായ ആകാശവാണി, ബ്രിട്ടന്റെ BBC, റേഡിയോ റുമേനിയ, റേഡിയോ ന്യൂസിലാന്‍ഡ്, NHK റേഡിയോ ജപ്പാന്‍, KBS റേഡിയോ കൊറിയ, വത്തിക്കാന്‍ റേഡിയോ തുടങ്ങിയവയാണ് ഡി.ആര്‍.എം സാങ്കേതിക വിദ്യ ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്ന പ്രധാന റേഡിയോ സ്റ്റേഷനുകള്‍.

ഈ സാങ്കേതിക വിദ്യയിലുള്ള പ്രക്ഷേപണം ലഭിക്കുന്നതിന് പ്രത്യേക DRM Radio ആവശ്യമാണ്. നിലവില്‍ 15000 രൂപയോളം വിലയുള്ളതാണ് വിപണിയില്‍ ലഭ്യമായിട്ടുള്ള ഡി.ആര്‍.എം റേഡിയോകള്‍. കൂടാതെ ചെലവു കുറഞ്ഞ DVB-T Dongle ഉം Dream DRM Decoder സോഫ്റ്റ്‌വെയര്‍ തുടങ്ങിയവ ഉപയോഗിച്ച് കമ്പ്യൂട്ടറില്‍ DRM Decode ചെയ്യാനാകും. ഞാനുള്‍പ്പെടെയുള്ള റേഡിയോ ഹോബിയിസ്റ്റുകള്‍ ഈ മാര്‍ഗ്ഗമാണ് ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നത്. 3000 കിലോമീറ്റര്‍ ദൂരെ തായ്‌ലാന്‍ഡിലെ റിലേയില്‍ നിന്നുള്ള BBC യുടെ ഡി.ആര്‍.എം സ്റ്റേഷന്‍ കേരളത്തില്‍ ഞാന്‍ ട്യൂണ്‍ ചെയ്തിട്ടുണ്ട്. കൂടാതെ ആകാശവാണിയുടെ വിവിധ ഡി.ആര്‍.എം സ്റ്റേഷനുകളും.

All India Radio Panaji is heard on DRM mode on 11th Nov, 0130 UTC on MW. The station is broadcasting on both analog mode and DRM mode in nearby frequencies. Analog frequency is 1287 kHz where as simulcast DRM Frequency is 1297 kHz. Signal was clear here at Kerala.
